Despite the fact that our university started to serve on October 25, 2010, Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan being wife of Sultan II.Mahmut and mother of Abdülmecid the1st founded our hospital in 1845 as a 200-bed as a hospital for poor males. We are a university and our clinic has a long history and trust of our patients as the continuation of Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan Vakıf Gureba Hospital. ENT department of the hospital was opened in 1905. The first specialist of our country is İhya Salih Bey. In 1903, he carried out ear policlinics and remained in this position until 1933. In the University Reform in 1933, Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine consisted of 250 beds, Aşağı Gureba and 1082 beds and Çapa Clinics. On this date, the ENT Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine was brought to Gureba. Dr. Erich Ruttin from Vienna and Dr. Ekrem Behçet from the hospital came to the hospital, Dr. Ihya Salih was retired. The KBB Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine has served at the Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan Vakıf Gureba Hospital until 1953.
ENT education and learning in the universal values of light and the modern standards of our undergraduate students by adding contemporary and modern knowledge and techniques to our classical knowledge, experience and accumulation in every field related to the Ear Nose Throat and Head Neck Surgery field, to educate ENT specialists and medical doctors who are respectful, aware of their responsibilities and the applications they require, to do researches that contributes to world medical science and to offer health services in high standards with compassionate approach to our patients.
Our department has gained national accreditation and has gained a vision to reach and maintain excellent research, education and service in the field of Ear-Nose-Throat Diseases. As a matter of fact, as a result of the audits and observations made by the Ear Nose Throat and Head and Neck Surgery Association, Proficiency Board and Accreditation Commission in the result of diligent and meticulous studies, ENT Department was accredited on 12 September 2015. The accreditation document announced and presented to us at the National ENT convention on October 30, 2015 has been an element that brings us to our sights for further success of our clinic. The success of this accreditation also constituted a prestige for Bezmiâlem Vakıf University.
The Associate Professorship exam, which was hosted by Bezmialem Vakıf University for the first time, was held on 9th of July, 2012 by the ENT Department.
In the Ear Nose Throat Polyclinic, there are 7 examination rooms, 2 operating theaters reserved for the ENT operations and 19 beds on the 3rd floor service.
Ear Nose Throat Department consists of 12 physicians, including 2 professors, 4 associate professors, 2 consultants and 1 specialist with 5 resident doctors. Ear, Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery Department of the different commissions of our faculty members assume various duties. 2 of our faculty members also have diploma of Oral, Facial and Maxillofacial Surgery and 3 of them have European KBB Board certificate. Two surgical instruments were patented for our ENT faculty member, Sabri Baki EREN's "Otolojik Kompas" and "Rinoportegü" surgeries.
We have 7 polyclinic rooms in our ENT clinic. In each examination room we serve an average of 50-60 patients per day. The patient is given appointments at an interval of 8 minutes. However, we provide services to patients without time limitation by providing all the care and necessary records required by the patients.
Audiological examinations, ultrasonography, nasal function tests and stroboscopic examination are performed in our two rooms, besides routine patient examinations. We also have one examination room in the Fatih district policlinic and one examination room in our neighborhood polyclinic which is also in Eyüp. We have 2 ENT doctors who are in our outpatient clinics who are doing full-day medical examinations. Our Dragos Hospital, which is in Maltepe, has 2 full-time physicians, one serving as an associate professor.
For further audiovestibular examination (hearing and balance study), the Faculty of Health Sciences, with 2 Expert Audiologists in the Department of Audiology, conducted by 5 Audiologists and 2 Audiometrists In addition to our labs in the hospital, we have an Audio-Vestibular unit established in Bezmiâlem-Fatih Medical Center.
We have 2 operating rooms in the OR. We perform an average of 10-14 operations per day. We have 19 beds in the service area. In addition to our fully equipped assistant and multifunctional room, we have a large dressing room. Experimental studies are carried out in the cochlear research laboratory where we can conduct advanced tests in a wide silent cabinet with high frequency BERA and Otoacustic Emission device for further researches.
More specific outpatient clinics have been established in the ENT disease clinic to improve our patients and to improve the academic quality. These are polyclinics of Tinnitus-Head Disease, Facial Nerve Disorders, Nasal Diseases, Snoring-Sleep Apnea, Adult and Child Airway Occlusions, Head-Neck, Thyroid and Salivary Gland Diseases. Patients with discomfort in these cases are expected to make appointments from these clinics, where our colleagues will direct patients related to these outpatient clinics.
In the KBB Department, morning and evening visits are regularly carried out by the faculty members who are responsible for the relevant day. Weekly meeting of all academic staff with residents is held on every Friday between 07.00 and 09.00 hours. This briefly reviews the current literature, examines the situation of controversial patients, conducts council meetings with other branches, discusses the latest congressional impressions, seminar presentations planned according to the core training program, assesses the pathology results of our patients, introduces clinical problems and socialization issues, the achievements of our clinic, our progress, disablied situations, writings and requests with prescriptions from the Dean's Office and the hospital are discussed and appropriate action plans, attitude and implementation rules are discussed. At the beginning of each training session, each faculty member is asked to present their expectations and objectives for the following year.
The Endocrine Council is held at 12.00-13.00 on Wednesdays, the Head and Neck Cancer Council is being held at 14.30 and the Sleep Apnea Council is on Tuesdays at 13.00-13.30.
Our assistants work one day in the policlinic, the next day in the operating room, in an intensive work schedule, and with a minimal seniority hierarchy, they exert a high effort and self devotion in scientific studies. Those who want to be assistants are given the opportunity for an overseas experience. Our assistants are given an exam once a year. For our trainings we have a library, training and meeting room, assistant and guard room etc and a multi-functional room in the ENT service. The electronic information sources to which the University Central Library is subscribed meet our scientific needs.
